All darkness holds the potential for light. . . this is proven by the multitudes of stars that have come into existence over all these aeons.
And all emptiness can still give birth to something tangible if given enough time - whether that is physical matter, substance, form, or something even more ethereal like thought and emotion.
In fact, many of our greatest insights come to us “out of nowhere”. And similarly, our most joyous surprises often happen to us “out of the blue”.
But of course, while emptiness may hold so many possibilities for us, it is not something to be taken lightly either.
An empty glass can be filled with fresh water or with muddy, depending on the choices we make. And, to paraphrase Friedrich Nietzsche; by staring too long into the abyss, we inevitably run the risk of the abyss staring back at us.

So with that in mind, the poem and photos I’m sharing below are all inspired by a mixture of these elements.
Sometimes, “Gazing out at nowhere” (whether from a hilltop, a train window, or sat by the window of a tall tower in a kingdom far away) can bring us a sense of ultimate internal peace - akin to a meditative state.
Sometimes, it can bring us so many dreams, and so much hope for what the future may have in store- as if all the world before us is a blank canvas, upon which we will one day paint a masterpiece.
But other times. the experience can be very different too.
We may feel emptiness itself is like a cage . . . or the breeding ground for memories which we so often try to forget . . . or a sheer void, where it is hard to even imagine how “something” could ever come out of all this “nothing”.
I suppose, as with all things, it is a matter of individual perspective.

Watch me walk in lilac haze on streets we met, and parted ways See that old familiar stare Gazing out at nowhere _ Days drift by like sand and tide This cold dark sea is my place to hide And when the storm passes, I'll meet you there Gazing out at nowhere _ Blessed by angels, touched by grace We let our wisdom go to waste But no-one promised life to be fair Gazing out at nowhere _ And tell me now, after all these years - do you remember my smile, or just my tears? Well it's a heavy mask wear Gazing out at nowhere
Black and white photography has so much to offer because it’s void of all the noise color can bring to an image. I’ve always loved the essence effect of B/W photos. Your words give the imagery such depth and visa versa. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful images and words.
